There are three main international regions for the Wii: North America, Europe,
and Asia. Games bought in one will not play in another. You can purchase mod
chips to disable the region code in the same way that region free DVD players
are made. Nintendo I am sure frowns upon this. We purchased a Japanese Wii and
games from http://www.yesasia.com and have had several Japanese game nights each
semester since, that have gone very well.

Sites like amazon.uk will not usually ship games directly to the US, so for
European PC or console games we have to have them sent to a colleague in Europe
who forwards them on.

On a side note, the PS3 is the one game system without region codes. The
benefit is that you can then get games with different languages to play on the
system bought here. This disadvantage is that the students are not locked in to
that language if they want to play the game. There's usually a setting in the
game to switch the language back to English, whereas the region specific Wii
will only let them play in Japanese.

Subject: #9361.3 (!) International Wii Games

Erica,

This may not directly answer your question, but the Wii browser does support
Flash based games, and there are several sites that are designed to be
specifically for Flash-based games that can be played on the Wii. I haven't
looked for any that are directly aimed at foreign language learning, but given
the world wide audience of the Wii, I have to believe that a Google search for
"Wii Flash games" on foreign specific domains (like .fr, .de, .jp, etc.) is
likely to turn up something.

Cheers,
Anthony
