This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, February 
24th, 2010.



A BLACK VULTURE was seen in Nashua and one was seen in Portsmouth on 
February 18-19, but they have not been reported again since then. Small 
numbers of TURKEY VULTURES were reported from various locations around the 
state during the past week.



A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen on Connecticut River in Hinsdale on February 
20th.



An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Seward Mountain Farm on Bowlder Road in 
Sullivan on February 22nd, and one was seen at the Pondicherry National 
Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on the 20th.



Over 80 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported from Gorham on February 20th.



4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and a BOREAL CHICKADEE were seen on Greenough Pond 
Road in Errol on February 21st, and 3 GRAY JAYS were seen here on the 20th. 
2 RED CROSSBILLS were seen off of Success Loop Road in Milan on the 20th.



Over 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS and several WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported 
from Chickwolnepy Road in Milan on February 20th, and several BOHEMIAN 
WAXWINGS were seen here on the 18th.



Over 80 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from the Tomapo Farm fields on Storrs 
Hill Road in Lebanon on February 21st.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Derry Wastewater Treatment Plant on February 
23rd. The treatment plant is closed Sunday and Monday and if you visit, 
please check in at the office.



An ICELAND GULL, 5 LESSER SCAUP, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen at the 
Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen on Powwow 
Pond in Kingston, all on February 21st.



A SNOW GOOSE has been seen several times during the past week associating 
with a flock of CANADA GEESE in Nashua in the athletic fields behind the 
Bishop Guertin School on Almont Street and was last reported on February 
24th.



A lone BRANT was seen in Rye Harbor on February 22nd.



2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen at Rattlesnake Mountain in Rumney on February 
24th, and a MERLIN was reported from Main Street in Nashua on February 23rd.



2 BALD EAGLES were seen along the Androscoggin River in Gorham on February 
24th, 2 were seen at the Reed Marsh Wildlife Management Area on State Route 
10 in Orford on the 22nd, 2 were seen at a nest along the Connecticut River 
in Hinsdale on the 22nd, 2 were seen in Errol on the 21st, one was seen in 
Kingston on the 21st, and 2 were seen at a nest in Dummer on the 20th.



2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen at the Pondicherry National Wildlife 
Refuge in Jefferson on February 23rd. A female was spotted on a dead fir 
along the railroad tracks about ¼-mile north of Cherry Pond, and a male was 
seen on a dead spruce along the railroad tracks about ½-mile north of Cherry 
Pond. Over 100 PURPLE FINCHES were reported from here on the 22nd.



A hiker on the Crawford Path in Crawford Notch saw 1 BOREAL CHICKADEE and 2 
GRAY JAYS at the junction of the Crawford Path and Mizpah Cut-off on 
February 22nd. 3 GRAY JAYS were seen near the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife 
Refuge Headquarters in Wentworth's Location on February 18th.



A WILSON'S SNIPE was seen standing on a small island in the stream that runs 
under the road to the gym area at the Winnacunnet High School in Hampton on 
February 18th.



A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET continues to visit a feeder in Concord and was last 
reported on February 19th.



A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER has been seen regularly visiting a feeder in 
Newmarket since February 6th.



Good numbers of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES were reported 
during the past week, a sure sign that spring is coming.
