My problems were specifically with two type 1 font suitcases in
/Library/Fonts, which stopped working after installing 10.6: Courier
TU and Chicago TU.  Removing the Courier TU file allowed the other
Courier font files to show through, so I now have a functional Courier
font.  Unfortunately, I don't have another copy of Chicago.
