This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, August 19th, 
2009.



A LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, 3 MANX SHEARWATERS, numerous GREATER and SOOTY 
SHEARWATERS, numerous WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and an undetermined species of 
JAEGER were all recorded in New Hampshire waters by birders on whale watch 
trips out of Rye on August 17th.



21 MANX SHEARWATERS, 83 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 2,093 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 465 
SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 240 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 11 NORTHERN GANNETS, 2 GREAT 
CORMORANTS, a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 7 PARASITIC JAEGERS, and a LONG-TAILED 
JAEGER were tallied on a whale watch trip out of Rye on August 16th. A 
POMARINE JAEGER and 11 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were reported from a different 
whale watch out of Hampton, also on the 16th.



A SOUTH POLAR SKUA, 4 LITTLE GULLS, several LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS a ROYAL 
TERN, and an ATLANTIC PUFFIN were reported by birders on whale watches 
originating in New Hampshire on August 15th and 16th, but it is uncertain if 
these birds were seen in New Hampshire waters.



20 ROSEATE TERNS were seen along the coast in Hampton on August 18th.



2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS are regularly being seen in Hampton Harbor at low tide 
and were last reported on August 14th.



A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was seen in Plaice Cove in Hampton on August 18th.



2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen in Hampton Harbor on August 18th.



A WESTERN SANDPIPER, 30 LEAST SANDPIPERS, a GADWALL, and a GREEN-WINGED TEAL 
were all seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on August 17th. An 
UPLAND SANDPIPER and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were seen here on the 14th. The 
treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on 
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the 
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. 
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road.



A GREAT EGRET was seen on Turkey Pond in Concord on August 19th.



A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported from North Mill Pond in Portsmouth 
on August 13th.



A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was reported from Amherst on August 17th.



A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard in Ashland on August 17th.



A hiker on Mount Jefferson reported 2 GRAY JAYS, 4 BOREAL CHICKADEES, and 20 
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS on August 17th, and a hiker on the Caps Ridge Trail in 
Jefferson Notch reported 9 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 2 GRAY JAYS, a BLACK-BACKED 
WOODPECKER, and12 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS on the 16th.



COMMON NIGHTHAWK migration continues with several reports of small numbers 
during the past week.
