Laura,

Online workbooks work well IF they work. Students usually catch on pretty
quickly to what they need to do, and a good online site will monitor them for
you and give you feedback.

However, if the site has any problems (a section that does not respond properly
to input, site is down at 2 am the day before an assignment is due), it can be
frustrating for the students and gives them an excuse to protest against the
assignments.

I would say that if the site is well-established it should be OK, but try to
find out if there is any maintenance schedule (times when it is known to be
down) and pass that on to your students, and also see if there is an option for
students to contact the site managers with questions and comments.

Judy
