Thanks to everyone for your suggestions-it was all very helpful. Turns out our
Library is already using Pharos so that's a real option and looks like just what
we need. I've also spoke with Kyocera who's printer we use and they too have a
print management program. So one way or the other I will have a program up and
going by this fall.

Colorado College uses a system called go print, which requires students to
release the print job from the station right next to the printer before it will
actually print.  This has somewhat diminished the volume of unclaimed printouts
in our lab, although we still have some trouble with that issue.

Well, charging the students for printer can be applied similar to what libraries
do like at Old Dominion University. It is just the matter if the college is
willing to spend the money to extend the software and buy the appropriate
hardware to the individual labs. Try to contact Northern Virginia Community
College's department of auxiliary services to find out what they use.  At NVCC's
open computer labs, students send print jobs and then have to either swipe their
ID or print card to release the document.

We are having the same problem here in the LARC at GSU, and the costs are
getting astronomical.  As a result, beginning summer semester we are dropping
the mandatory lab fee from $15 to $10, but at the same time installing a Pharoes
printer control on the printer.  In effect, this passes the direct cost of the
printing back to the students.  Each student at GSU has $3 of "free" printing
available (60 pages) on their student id cards and has to pay .05 for any
additional pages.  

I'm not sure if the Pharoes system is proprietary to GSU or not.

Susan,

We've implemented GoPrint as a print management solution on campus.  Though it
allows for charging students, we have no plans to do so.  Since the system
involves a release station at the printer, the student has to go up to the
printer, swip their ID card and then they can release jobs to be printed.  Since
they are standing right there, they rarely forget to pick them up.

We have pretty good data that indicates this system is responsible for at least
a 20% decrease in lab printing across campus.

You should have a "release station" at the printer, so the job doesn't print
until they walk up to the printer and swipe their ID or enter a
username/password. This pretty much eliminated the problem for us. By "release
station" I mean a computer that does nothing but authenticate for the print
jobs. Ours have a card swipe attached through the USB port.
