Irene and others: you really need a picture of a lab full of these

http://www.utm.edu/staff/globeg/audioactive.html

I tried google imges briefly, but I think they have banned all truly ugly
pictures. I have been working in language labs since about 1960 (when I was a
high-school lab assistant). I Have resigned from the directorship of our lab (as
of this Fall) because we need full-time French teachers (who are already working
here) to boost enrollment above the danger zone. I really do not know how we
will manage all of the things that come up in management, small repairs,
configs, making judgments about buying equipment, etc., but in August, that will
be the university's problem. No question about eliminating the lab, which
represents 40% of the lower-division student's contact time with department
resources.

I recently heard that the Language Depts at UMass Amherst received a
challenge grant to launch a fundraising campaign for a new multi-media lab!

I was asked for archival pictures of people using the old lab which I do not
have. I'd really appreciate it if any of you have similar pictures (or old
Tandberg marketing brochures) which you can send me. Our lab had no
windows or monitors and was configured in rows. The goal seems to be to
show a contrast, in fundraising documents, between what was and what will
be.

Thanks,
Irene Starr
