I'd simply like to point out that the pairing/grouping functionality of LangLab
PASSPORT, in which discussions can be prompted by any multimedia instructional
resources, also permits this collaborative learning, collaborative correction of
writing, etc. I'd be happy to explain to anyone interested how to structure any
desired activity. Furthermore, this in-class work can be integrated with
individual work the students do with the same or related materials outside
class. It would give you files of students' work that are easy to retrieve and
assess, and let you provide individual feedback to students on their work. If
you use classroom-management software in conjunction with LangLab, you can even
create skeletal lessons in LangLab without the prompt content (perhaps just an
empty text box in a item for a student to type miscellaneous corrections, say,
in addition to recording) and then improvise the lesson by using the
complementary classroom-management software to send the students whichever
prompt materials you wish, including students' previous written work. And you
could manage it all from an office--you don't need to be in the lab itself.
