SmartBoard is great to actively engage students in attending to
teacher input on numerous topics having them circle, underline items
in particular visual as per teacher or peer input.
Recently using Hungry Planet from youtube.com (taken from book) Elem.
Span. students viewed what families of 4 around the world eat on
weekly basis and were directed to circle fresh vs. prepared foods,
vegetable, beverages etc. learning basic vocabulary (as well as amount
spent on weekly food) in a richly contextualized presentation on world
reality. SmartBoard affords the opportunity to introduce vocabulary in
an interactive way (having students follow directions, circle items
you mention as significant etc.)on innumerable topics in a rich
context (using powerpoints, video, charts, art!!, maps, photos etc.)
which educate, inform and many times inspire students to seek further
information and research topics.
Also, sites like sheppardsoftware.com offer interactive, quick,
challenging multi-level reviews of world and regional geography that
is both fun and extremely effective with SmartBoard.
