This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, October 2nd,
2008.
48 CASPIAN TERNS were seen migrating along the coast on October 1st. At one
point, at least 18 were present in Hampton Harbor.
24 FORSTER'S TERNS and 375 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen in Hampton Harbor on
October 1st.
An ARCTIC TERN was seen in Hampton Harbor on September 30th.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from Great Boar's Head, and one was seen from
Rye Harbor State Park, both on September 28th. A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was
also seen from Rye Harbor State Park on the 28th.
2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye,
and 9 LAUGHING GULLS were reported from along the coast, all on September
29th.
A juvenile COMMON MOORHEN was seen in Eel Pond in Rye on October 1st.
2 juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen off of the north side of
Island Path in Hampton on September 29th, and at least one was still present
on the 30th. A juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was also present on the
29th.
A STILT SANDPIPER, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, a
WESTERN SANDPIPER, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, a DUNLIN, 9 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
a GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a LEAST SANDPIPER, and 70
KILLDEER were reported from Moore Fields, located along Route 155A in
Durham, all on October 1st.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen on Diamond Ledge Road in Sandwich on
September 27th. A TENNESSEE WARBLER, and 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS were seen
at the Trails at Pickering Ponds in Rochester on September 25th.
A probable SEASIDE SPARROW was seen at the marsh across from the seawall at
Bass Beach in Rye on September 28th. 25 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were
reported from behind Little Jack's Restaurant in Hampton Marsh, located
along Route 1A in Hampton, on September 30th.
4 VESPER SPARROWS were reported from the Bellamy River Wildlife Management
Area in Dover on September 29th.
119 NORTHERN PINTAILS and a NORTHERN SHOVELER were seen migrating along the
coast on October 1st.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on
September 27th.
Over 30 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen in the fields located behind the Post
Office on Loudon Road in Concord on October 1st.
6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in Lyme Center on September 28th, and a flock
was seen at Bedell Bridge State Park in Haverhill on the 27th.
A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen in Amherst on September 30th.
2 BOREAL CHICKADEES and at least 1 AMERICAN PIPIT were reported form Mount
Chocorua on September 28th.
HAWK migration continues, with over 8,000 raptors reported from the Pack
Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough since September 1st.
Over 2,000 hawks have been reported from the Carter Hill Orchard observation
platform in Concord since September 1st. Be sure to visit both observatories
to help out with the count! New Hampshire Audubon staffs both locations.
