Hi,

I believe it depends on what your space has to offer:
- a lab would refer to a room with specialised equipment and material
for language practice whereas
- a centre offers several multi-functional rooms (for group work, one to
one advisory or buddy, reading spaces) and more varied activities
(training sessions, teaching, language practice, dvd/satellite TV
viewing, etc..)

In our language learning centre, we have 3 language labs (2 that we
name "computer classrooms" because formal tuition happens there, and 1
self-access multimedia lab). We also have 1 seminar room, 1 sound space
(that contains older tape units for older material we wish to retain)
and a self-access centre acting as a small library with grade reader and
reference books and of course a lot of seating space for students to
work.
Also, we have avoided the word "lab" in the naming of our rooms for it
sounds too dry for what language learning is about, even at an academic
level.

Take a look at our website for more info and pictures.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Does anyone have (current) descriptions of reason or purpose for
establishing the language learning center or changing the name of
language
lab to language learning center?

Thanks.

Fuqiang Zhuo
