I am curious about this, too.
I inherited an LLC which I think got that title with a renovation in
1987, so the ideas behind the change were not current. I was discouraged
by my supervisor from trying to make any more changes more recently,
though.
I think the idea was that language labs are boring 50s facilities for
listening to tapes while a language learning center is bright and fun
and has an array of technological options for learning.
I don't like the name for our facility for a couple of reasons. Our
"LLC" has facilities in a couple of different buildings, so it is not a
single center. LLC can be misleading since it implies that we offer lots
of stand-alone programs (come to us to learn a language!), while our
primary mission is in fact supporting the language classes and faculty.
