Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution
and member of the Five College consortium has been awarded a generous
three-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation with the intent
"to make Hampshire College into a 'language learning community' where
students are motivated to integrate the exploration of a world language
into their individualized studies." The first incumbent of this position
will have an unparalleled opportunity to shape the future of language
studies at Hampshire, and potentially to do so in such a way that we are
seen as a national model

The responsibilities of the Language Coordinator involve serving as a
resource for those seeking opportunities to integrate language study
into their academic programs and for faculty career development. Working
with faculty to promote foreign-language materials into their teaching
so that students are inspired to understand how to access such resources
to deepen their understanding of issues and cultures. Assist students to
develop individualized plans of language study that support and advance
their respective creative, academic or community-engagement interests.
Serves as the college's primary liaison with the Five College Center for
the Study of World Languages, reinforcing that language is important for
all who seek to understand the world and to make a difference in that world.

Master's degree required; PhD preferred in language pedagogy,
second-language acquisition or a related liberal arts field. Competence
in one or more languages other than English is required. The Language
Coordinator will not be expected to teach language at Hampshire. This
position requires a high degree of independence and flexibility with
excellent verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills.
