Dick,
One key question is what software are you using to compress with? For
long movies at 720x480, we've gotten the best results with
Compressor's preset codecs (with minor tweaks). No problems with the
lag/sync problem you refer to; QTPro and Squeeze both had them (tho'
presumably at a deep level it's all pretty much the same with the H264
codec).
Another issue is the version of QT and H264 playback on computers
with dedicated video cards vs. without. With all of the different
versions of QT out there, it'd be good to see how the results vary.
The H264 codec is computationally intensive so playback on 3+ year old
hardware, and many laptops can be an issue (for those you may want to
encode using an older codec (e.g. Sorenson) or at 320x240.
On the server a place to look is hard drive speed (best practice is
not to stream off the boot drive), on a deFragged HD, and of course on
the fastest network you can. If you're on Gigabit Ethernet, make sure
that setting is selected in QTSS.
Let us know what finally works, but do know that many others have
dealt with the issue. And some solve it by simply breaking the movie
up into 20-30 minute segments. --jeff
