This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for February 11, 2008 covering the
period February 4 - 10, 2008.

 

Highlights this week include a NORTHERN PINTAIL on Lake Wantastiquet in
Vernon on 2/5; a CANVASBACK drake and two REDHEAD drakes off the South Hero
Causeway on 2/9 and a rare, unconfirmed female THREE-TOED WOODPECKER
observed up close in Berkshire on 2/10.

 

Five COMMON LOONS were sighted from Charlotte Town Beach on 2/9.

 

An immature SNOW GOOSE was spotted in Shelburne's Meach Cove on 2/5.
Nine-hundred CANADA GEESE were seen in Rutland on 2/5.  Five MUTE SWANS
remained at the Grand Isle ferry landing and were last reported 2/8. A
RING-NECKED DUCK was sighted off the South Hero Causeway on 2/9.  A
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen at the Grand Isle ferry landing on 2/8 and
in Shelburne on 2/9. 

 

On 2/9 a 2nd year ICELAND GULL was spotted in Shelburne Bay and two 1st
winter ICELAND GULLS were observed out on the ice on the north side of the
Sandbar Causeway. On 2/4 a GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the Tri-town Water
District Plant in Addison and on 2/9 GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen in Panton (1),
Sandbar Causeway (two 1st winter birds) and South Hero Causeway (2 1st
winter birds). 

 

A BELTED KINGFISHER was sighted south of Vernon Dam on 2/10.

 

A NORTHERN FLICKER was observed at Charlotte Town Beach and in Shelburne on
2/9.

 

A large flock of 1,000 AMERICAN ROBINS passed through Williston on 2/10.

 

Flocks of both CEDAR WAXWINGS (as many as 300 in Montpelier on 2/9) and
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS continue to be seen throughout the state.  

 

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a NORTHERN FLICKER were sighted in West
Brattleboro on 2/10.

 

There continued to be multiple sightings of PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON
REDPOLLS throughout Vermont this week.  A HOARY REDPOLL was seen in
Lyndonville (2/7) and North Williston (2/10).
