Bald eagles have spent the winter on the Connecticut River near Wilder
Dam for at least the past 10 years. The Connecticut River is one of the
five major eagle wintering areas in the state of NH. Every year we try
to see them, and generally succeed!

Come join the search with some members of the Mascoma Chapter of NH
Audubon on Saturday, Feb 9th, from 10 a.m. to noon. A scope will be set
up at the Wilder Dam spillway, on the Vermont side. Bring binoculars if
you have some; another scope is always helpful too. Dress warmly. And
who knows what other birds might make an appearance.

The Valley News had a [small] article on Jan 30, 2008, reporting that a
record number of bald eagles were counted for NH during the 2008
National Mid-Winter Bald Eagle Survey (a period of two weeks in
January). Observers counted 67 bald eagles; up from the previous record
of 55 for 2005 and 2006 (the number dipped to 50 for 2007).

"** Note: In order to avoid double-counting, Vermont and New Hampshire
have agreed to split the Connecticut River, with Vermont credited for
all eagles seen north of Wilder Dam, and New Hampshire credited for all
eagles seen south of the dam, regardless of which state's volunteers
actually observe the birds."
