This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, January 10th,
2008.
An EARED GREBE has been regularly seen on the coast in the cove located near
the North Hampton and Rye town line, and was most recently reported on
January 7th.
A female KING EIDER was seen off of North Side Park in Hampton on January
5th.
A male HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen from Bicentennial Park, located off of Route
1A in Hampton, on January 7th.
A THICK-BILLED MURRE was seen off of Great Boar's Head in Hampton on January
7th, and a DOVEKIE was seen from Ragged Neck in Rye on the 5th. 25
RAZORBILLS were seen off of Seabrook Beach on the 7th, and 15 BLACK
GUIILEMOTS were reported from along the coast on the 6th.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen off of Great Boar's Head in Hampton on
January 6th, and a female was seen here on the 5th. Another female BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE was seen south of Ragged Neck in Rye, also on the 5th.
An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL, 3 ICELAND GULLS, a GLAUCOUS GULL, a LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, a female NORTHERN SHOVELER, and a pair of NORTHERN
PINTAILS were all reported from the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
January 7th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always
open during daylight hours.
2 ICELAND GULLS were seen Hampton Harbor, and 1 was seen in Portsmouth
Harbor, all on January 6th.
2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at Awcomin Marsh in Rye together with a flock
of 42 HORNED LARKS on January 5th.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 110 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 3 LESSER SCAUP, a GREATER
SCAUP, a RUDDY DUCK, 125 HOODED MERGANSERS, 47 COMMON MERGANSERS, a WOOD
DUCK, 8 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 13 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 260 HORNED LARKS were seen
in the Connecticut River valley between Charlestown and Hinsdale on January
5th.
An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL continues to be seen at the Park Street Common in
Exeter, and was most recently reported on January 6th.
At least one HOARY REDPOLL was seen in Sandwich on January 9th.
COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included 125 in Sandwich on
January 9th, 106 in Rumney on the 7th, 40 in Holderness on the 7th, 60 in
Jefferson on the 4th, and 12 in Chichester on the 4th.
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 20 in Sandwich on
January 9th, nearly 200 at Bow Lake Village on the 8th, 41 in North Conway
on the 5th, 100 in Rochester on the 5th, 150 in Strafford on the 5th, 200 in
Northwood on the 5th, 34 in Pittsfield on the 5th, and 60 in Antrim on the
4th.
NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings during the past week included 1 in Holderness on
January 8th, 2 in Exeter on the 6th, 2 in North Hampton on the 6th, 1 in
Hinsdale on the 5th, 1 in Newton on the 5th, 1 in Greenland on the 5th, 1 in
Rye on the 5th, 1 in Jefferson on the 4th, 1 in Newington on the 4th, and 1
in Enfield Center on the 3rd.
PINE GROSBEAKS sightings during the past week included 12 in Epsom on
January 8th, 11 in Brentwood on the 7th, 6 in Etna on the 7th, 8 in
Strafford on the 4th, and 50 at the Peterborough Middle School on the 4th.
EVENING GROSBEAK sightings during the past week included 60 in Jefferson,
and 14 in Barnstead, all on January 4th.
17 PURPLE SANDPIPERS and 8 SANDERLINGS were seen at Rye Ledge in Rye on
January 7th, and 35 DUNLIN were seen in Hampton Harbor on January 6th.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at the Ashland Transfer Station on January 5th.
2 GRAY JAYS and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were seen at the Lake Umbagog National
Wildlife Refuge Headquarters in Errol on January 9th.
A PINE WARBLER was seen on Towle Road in Chichester on January 5th and 6th.
A FOX SPARROW was seen on Appledore Road in North Hampton, and a SAVANNAH
SPARROW was seen at the Seabrook Waste Water Treatment Plant, both on
January 5th.
