This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for August 27, 2007 covering the period
August 20 - 26, 2007.
Highlights include a SNOWY EGRET at Herrick's Cove on 8/24, a possible
EURASIAN WIGEON sighted by several birders near mudflats along Dead Creek on
8/18, a WHIMBREL seen just off the Vermont shore by a birder traveling on
the Charlotte Ferry on 8/25, a WESTERN SANDPIPER and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at
Dead Creek 8/18 and 8/19, CASPIAN TERNS at Mississquoi NWR (1 on 8/19 and
8/20), 1 from the Charlotte Ferry on 8/25 and Grand Isle (2 on 8/21 and 7 on
8/26), a JAEGER species off Grand Isle as well as two juvenile PARASITIC
JAEGERS at Charlotte Town Beach on 8/26 and an immature ORCHARD ORIOLE near
Black Mt. Road in Brattleboro on 8/25.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was spotted in Grand Isle on 8/25.
Large numbers of GREAT BLUE HERONS have been seen this week, including 70+
at Dead Creek's Brilyea Access on 8/21 and 27 on 8/22.
An early SNOW GOOSE was seen by a birder canoeing along Dead Creek on 8/22.
Three NORTHERN SHOVELERS were observed at Dead Creek on 8/20. Several large
gatherings of WOOD DUCKS were sighted this week, including 17 at Lefferts
Pond on 8/23, 24 at Allen Brothers Marsh on 8/22 and 47 on 8/24, 45 along
the South Hero Marsh Trail on 8/24 and 20 along Slang Road in Panton on
8/25.
MERLINS were spotted at Dead Creek, West Rutland Marsh, Rutland Town (3) and
Mississquoi NWR this week.
In addition to the SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, LEAST
SANDPIPERS and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS that have been seen regularly at Dead
Creek this week the following shorebird sightings took place: BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS (1 on west shore of Grand Isle 8/21, 6 at Dead Creek 8/25),
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS (3 at Brilyea Access, Dead Creek on 8/20, 1 on 8/21)
and 5 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS at Holcomb Slang on 8/25.
Twenty BLACK TERNS were observed at Mississquoi NWR on 8/21.
Many TREE SWALLOWS have been seen gathering including 400 at Herrick's Cove
on 8/24.
