>Subject: RE: barcode & catalog system for Macs

Michael--

We use an open source web-based system for cataloging and lending called
"Open Media Collectors Database" (http://opendb.iamvegan.net ) -- it
runs on PHP with a MySQL backend, and has the nice advantage of allowing
patrons to search the catalog online. For our purposes, the code
required a bunch of tweaking from the vanilla install, but in the end it
has worked great for us for almost a year.

You can see our customizations at:
http://www.slu.edu/colleges/AS/languages/llc/library

I'd be happy to share the customizations-- with the caveat that the
changes I made are VERY kludgey, and quite possibly only work well in
our environment. :-)

For making labels, we just use Word with a free (for educational use)
bar code font from:
http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/free/

We did have more specialized bar code label printing software, but just
using the font and making our out label templates in word is a lot
easier for us to manage. Plus, we can just buy regular old avery labels
of any size/shape and use those on a laser printer. Regular labels
combined with a protective layer of clear packing tape seem to do the
trick for us. The font is TTF so should work on a Mac as well.

Cheers,
Chris
