You might want to ask if your university would create an custon
installation of MediaWiki in the German directory you already have
(http://www.mediawiki.org), and even have them set the language to DE
(German), so that the wiki itself operates in the target language.  The
version that they install will have to be based on what version of PHP (4
or 5) is available on the university's webserver -- version 1.6.10 if they
are still using PHP 4, but 1.9 or 1.10 if they are using PHP 5.  Even if
you're using only version 1.6 of MediaWiki, it's really powerful and
flexible.
