This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for May 7, 2007 covering the period
April 30-May 6, 2007.

 

            The highlights of this week include the sighting of a
BLACK-TAILED GODWIT in West Salisbury 4/30 which has not been seen since
that date.  Up to four EURASIAN WIGEONS have been sighted in Ferrisburg
(5/1) with the latest sighting of one bird on 5/4 near Kingsland Bay State
Park.  Directions for this (and all previous) sightings are:  From Rt. 7 in
Ferrisburg, head west on Little Chicago Road.  Little Chicago ends in a "T
"at Sands Road. Take a right and look for a well-marked private road called
Grosse Pointe. The birds are in a flooded field lakeside of this
intersection.

 

            A GREAT EGRET was observed feeding along the banks of Otter
Creek in Middlebury on 5/6.  Four GLOSSY IBISES were first seen in West
Salisbury on 4/30; 3 were seen on 5/1 and 5/2.  

 

            A MERLIN was spotted in Corinth on 5/5.

 

            Three SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying overhead in Ludlow on 5/1
and there was a report of one sighted at Bristol Pond on 5/6.

 

            A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen in Ferrisburg on 4/30 along
Little Chicago Road and along Hawkins Road on 5/2 and 5/4.  GREATER and/or
LESSER YELLOWLEGS were observed in West Salisbury, Ferrisburg, Bristol Pond,
Muddy Brook Marsh, Mississquoi NWR, Herrick's Cove, and Brattleboro Retreat
Meadows this week.  The first reports of SOLITARY SANDPIPERS came from
Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on 5/4 and 5/5 as well as Herrick's Cove on 5/5
and 5/6 and Muddy Brook Marsh on 5/6. Spring's first sighting of UPLAND
SANDPIPERS occurred in Highgate where 2 - 3 were spotted on 5/1. The
season's first LEAST SANDPIPER was seen at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on
5/5.  The first migrating DUNLIN was seen in Addison on 5/6.

 

            A CASPIAN TERN was spotted at Delta Park on 5/4.

 

            CHIMNEY SWIFTS returned all over the state this week.

 

             RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, the first of the season, were seen
in Hartland and West Brattleboro on 5/5.

 

            RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were observed in West Salisbury,
Herrick's Cove, Pownal, Addison and Ferrisburg this week.

 

            Several flycatcher species made their first appearance this
week.  A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen in Hyde Park on 5/6.   LEAST
FLYCATCHERS returned to Hartland, Norwich and Middlebury on 5/5 and the
first GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER was seen at Dead Creek on 5/6.

 

            The season's first WARBLING VIREO was seen at Herrick's Cove on
5/3 and many more were reported throughout the state during the week.  The
first YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was spotted at Mississquoi NWR this week.

 

            The first reported PURPLE MARTIN of the season was seen in
Ferrisburg on 5/4.

 

            The first CLIFF SWALLS were seen on 4/29 at Berlin Pond, Grand
Isle (4 on 5/1) and Herrick's Cove on 5/3.

 

            First sightings of HOUSE WRENS occurred in Brandon (4/30),
Herrick's Cove (5/3) and Shelburne (5/5) this week.  The season's first
MARSH WRENS were seen at Herrick's Cove on 5/3 and at West Rutland Marsh on
5/5.

 

            Many first seasonal sightings of warbler species occurred this
week:  NASHVILLE WARBLER (Rupert, 5/4; Herrick's Cove, 5/4; Brandon,
Tinmouth Channel and Dead Creek, 5/6), NORTHERN PARULA (Norwich 5/5,
Herrick's Cove and Plainfield, 5/6), BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER (3 in
Middlebury, 5/1), BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER (Rutland Town, 5/5), PRAIRIE WARBLER
(Brandon, 5/5), AMERICAN REDSTART (2 in Rutland Town, 5/5 and Herrick's Cove
5/6), OVENBIRD (Pownal, Norwich and Brandon on 5/5), and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
(Herrick's Cove, 5/5).

 

            The first LINCOLN'S SPARROW was sighted in Brattleboro on 5/2,
the second in Hartland on 5/3.  The first WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen in
Shoreham on 5/5.

 

            The earliest BALTIMORE ORIOLE returned to North Ferrisburg on
4/30.  

 

            Spring's first BOBOLINK was spotted in Rutland on 5/4.
