Dear IALLT Friends,

The University of Michigan joins The University of Wisconsin, Dartmouth and the
other great institutions with open LRC Director searches.
I have been offered and have accepted the position of Director of LSA
Instructional Support Services--a brand new unit being created out of several
smaller units which is charged with supporting faculty and students across all
disciplines with instructional initiatives, instructional technology, and
innovative learning environments. This is a tremendous opportunity and will be
really great one day after we've worked out a lot of the organizational kinks
that come with creating a new unit. :^) Needless to say, I can't do two jobs
at once.

Someone, therefore, has the extraordinary opportunity for someone to join an
exceptional team of colleagues, work with inspired faculty and students, take on
stimulating and fulfilling projects, and make a real impact on a large number of
students' language learning endeavors. Those of you who attending IALLT at the
University of Michigan in 2003 know Ann Arbor is a vibrant and lively place to
live.

The College of Literature, Science and the Arts is looking for a highly
motivated and inspired person to lead and direct the LRC. The UofM LRC serves
and supports students and faculty in language and culture programs across LSA
with breadth and depth in technology and instructional services, collections,
resources, training, and course support. The LRC provides services to over 400
instructors, almost 10,000 students, in over 40 languages. The LRC staff is
committed to the creation of new and original materials for use in language,
literature, and culture courses and also provides training for faculty and
students to gain technology skills and create their own materials. The
University of Michigan has a long commitment to language learning and language
learning technology -- the LRC is planning on celebrating it's 60th Anniversary
next year! Yes, that's right: six times ten = 60!! The Director of the LRC
reports directly to Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Education.
The working title is Director of the Language Resource Center, and the official
title is Academic/Research Program Officer Senior. The salary range listed on
the posting is mid to high 70's, but that can go higher based on experience.

The full position description is available on-line (see below), but I include
information on the duties and desired/minimum qualifications:

Duties:
Plan and direct the development, implementation and administration of all
programs, services, initiatives, and driving vision of the LSA Language Resource
Center to insure the center fulfills its mission to students, faculty,
departments and the College. Manage LRC facilities, including digital language
lab, video and audio studios, computer classrooms, and walk-in computer labs,
and participate in space planning. Primary responsibilities include: strategic
planning, academic and outreach programming and support services for the LRC,
leadership on instructional technology initiatives across the College's many
language and culture programs, (including integration of academic technology
into foreign language acquisition pedagogies), management of the human resources
functions for the department, including supervision of all regular staff and
student workers, oversight of all departmental business affairs and the
financial viability of the Language Resource Center, and participation on
College and University committees as needed.
Desired Qualifications:
Ph.D. in foreign language, literature or linguistics, education, educational
technology, or related field. Five years experience working with and/or
developing instructional technology in higher education. Five or more years of
management experience in an academic or nonprofit area, as well as teaching
experience in higher education. Experience in higher education administration
strongly preferred. Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with multiple projects and prioritize deadlines.
Well-developed interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication
skills; exceptional customer services skills. Familiarity with: instructional
technology within networked environments, digital media, web-based instruction,
and basic issues concerning intellectual property, copyright, and publishing;
strong computing and technical skills, including with word processing,
spreadsheet, database and other applications. Ability to envision the use of a
wide range of media and technologies in concert to their fullest potential for
increased instructional effectiveness.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent experience in relevant field of study. Demonstrated ability
to develop and implement innovative programs and instruction; strong
instructional technology experience; successful supervisory experience;
experience in academic administration; experience with budgeting, controlling
costs, planning and scheduling; strong communication and customer service
skills; experience working with a wide range and diverse group of faculty,
students and staff.

Official applications must go through the University of Michigan's eMploy site
(http://www.umich.edu/~jobs/ reference job number 6944), as well as sending
materials to the search committee. I'll warn you, the eMploy site is not
particularly elegant or designed for people to submit a full dossier - it's
really more designed to handle administrative or clerical positions. Therefore,
in addition to posting a cover letter and resume on the eMploy site, be sure to
send all application materials (cover letter, CV, supplementary materials,
support letters, etc.) to: [log in to unmask]

I would strongly encourage all interested parties to apply. The UofM LRC is an
extraordinary place to work and I highly recommend you consider coming to
Michigan. If you have any questions about the position, the LRC, the staff, the
faculty, the administration, or anything else, don't hesitate to contact me
directly. I'll be happy to help in any way.

Best wishes,
Moni
