Laura,
We've experienced similar problems with our Russian Phonetic Keyboard
installation, which was developed here at BYU several years ago. All of
our Humanities lab and classroom systems were experiencing spontaneous
re-boots, and it took us quite awhile to narrow it down to the Russian
Phonetic keyboard program we were installing. I deployed an image at the
beginning of this semester which didn't include the Russian Phonetic
Keyboard, and we had no re-booting problems. Jarom McDonald is to be
credited with doing the sleuthing which tracked down the problem.
Jarom suggested we try the free Russian Phonetic Keyboard download
indicated below. We installed the program a couple of weeks ago on
several of our computers and have not experienced any adverse effects.
The installation of the keyboard program is a bit bulky, but I found the
bulky installation problem to be miniscule after experiencing the
re-booting problems. One of our students has scripted the installation
to make it a little easier. We're currently using MS Office 2003. We
haven't yet tried the keyboard with MS Office 2007.
Russian (Phonetic) Keyboard Installation:
1. Download the keyboard file from
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/paulgor/kbdnt_zh.zip
2. Extract the .dll from the .zip package and copy it to
C:\Windows\System32.
3. Open the Registry Editor (Run/Regedit) and go to
HKEY.LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Current Control Set/Control/Keyboard
Layouts/00010419.
4. Double-click on "Layout File" to and change it to KBD1251Y.DLL.
5. Double-click on "Layout Text" and change it to "Russian (Phonetic)."
6. Add new Russian keyboard-it will still say "(Typewriter)."
7. Run the Registry Editor again, go to Edit/Find and search for
"(Typewriter)." It will take you directly to where you need to edit.
Change the key to say "(Phonetic)."
8. Be sure "English" remains the default language on the Language Bar.
If it doesn't, go to Regional and Language Settings in the Control
Panel, check the default language and be sure it's "English."
9. To double-check the installation, open up Word. Select Russian as the
default language. Once Russian is selected, click on the little keyboard
in the Language Bar, and you should have the option of selecting either
the Russian native keyboard or the Russian Phonetic Keyboard. Select the
Russian Phonetic Keyobard. Then press the W & V keys. The W should be a
Russian character and the V should be a B.
10. If it isn't working correctly, try logging out of the account and
logging back in or re-booting the system before re-installing.
