Tammy,

I'm not sure if I saw your original post so don't know if the students are
taking these on-line placement exams from off-campus. However, here at the
University of Hawaii we do use an on-line Spanish Placement exam and
students come to our computer labs to take the exam and must present a photo
ID. Since it is a placement exam and is only used to place the student at
the appropriate level, it seems to me having a more advanced friend take the
exam for you so that you can place into a higher level course is self
defeating. The policy here is if you place into a third level course and
wish to fulfill the 2 year language requirement you must pass that third
level course before you will receive credit for the first 2 years. Should a
student cheat to get into a higher level course it would become apparent
that they were not at the correct level and they would be asked to drop down
to a lower level course.

Aloha,
Daniel Tom

Thanks SO MUCH to those of you who offered suggestions about on-line
placement tests for French and other languages. It's a very busy time
and I may not have time to investigate them until as late as spring
break, but having the information is very helpful. One issue my
colleague raised is the issue of having a more advanced friend take the
test for them. Does anyone have suggestions about how to reply to such
concerns or ideas about how to remedy academic dishonesty in this situation?
Renewed thanks. I'm a bit of a lurker but really appreciate the list.
Best, Tammy
