My experience with delivering QuickTime streaming audio and video (9
servers, been doing this for the better part of a decade) to thousands of
students using Windows and OS X, a variety of browsers, access from
dial-up through DSL/cable modem and higher, has been remarkably
successful, so I echo Otmar's post. We've developed a FAQ over the years,
and that helps students out a great deal, and I can't recall any instance
that couldn't be solved, and the vast majority of the time it was
something already in the FAQ. We ran Real service a long time ago; the
server service was unreliable (and this was echoed by other associates),
and we had to paid a fee to run it. To be fair, that was a long time ago,
and I can't comment on the current state of affairs.
Be sure you have server-class hardware (xserves work very well).
