This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for January 15, 2007 covering the period
January 8-14, 2007.

 

            COMMON LOONS were spotted in Charlotte (1 on 1/12), in a cove
near Red Rocks Park in South Burlington (1 on 1/13) and in Button Bay (2 on
1/14) this week.

 

            A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, a species which normally departs in
November, was seen at Lake Bomoseen on 1/11 as well as Shelburne Bay on
1/14.

            

            Another very uncommon sighting in January was that of a GREAT
BLUE HERON at Lake Bomoseen on 1/11.

 

            Several late sightings of waterfowl occurred this week.  A drake
NORTHERN PINTAIL was observed in Shelburne Bay on 1/12 and 1/14.  A
RING-NECKED DUCK was sighted at the mouth of the West River in Brattleboro
on 1/9.  Two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were spotted in a cove south of Red Rocks
Park in South Burlington on 1/13.

 

            A total of 17 NORTHERN HARRIERS were found in a birding
expedition in the Champlain Valley on 1/13 as well as 12 RED-TAILED HAWKS.
There were many sightings of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS this week, the most unusual
of which took place at Moose Bog on 1/11.  An AMERICAN KESTREL was spotted
at Dead Creek on 1/13. 

 

            On 1/13 three SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Dead Creek and one
was seen in Shoreham on 1/14.

 

            Numerous CAROLINA WRENS were spotted this week, including one in
Norwich, Woodstock, Saxton's River and White River Junction.

 

            A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was at a suet feeder in Sunderland on
1/10.  More sightings of THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS occurred at Moose Bog,
including 1 on 1/7 and one on 1/14 as well as BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS (1 on
1/10 and one on 1/13).

 

            An EASTERN PHOEBE was seen at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on
1/9.

 

            NORTHERN SHRIKES were sighted in Waitsfield, Dead Creek and
Grand Isle this week.
