Hi,

I'm not sure if this would meet your needs, but the Dialang project has
created a FREE online diagnostic test of common European languages (Spanish,
English, French, German etc). ONce the software is downloaded, students
take the test on any computer with internet access and then receive a score
report that lists the student level in reading, writing, listening, and
grammar according to the European Common Framework benchmarks. Since these
benchmarks are VERY fleshed out (even more than ACTFL guidelines, I would
argue) and broken into sublevels within levels, it might be conceivable to
determine which European Common Framework benchmarks represent "cut off's"
for your program's courses/levels.

The service is free and also provides the added benefit that participants
receive some general feedback about their results as well as suggestions on
how to improve their language skills.

The disadvantage here is that this is not a "secure" test that would
circumvent cheating or identity issues. But for those walk-in's during
registration time that ask, "What level of Spanish do you think I should
take?", the Dialang online diagnostic test might be a great (and free) way
to go.

Dear all,

I am looking for on-line alternatives to the college FL placement test.
We currently administer the Iowa French test to entering students at
registration, but students who register by phone (and cannot travel to
campus) don't take it. Placement gets very messy. Is there anything out
there for French, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese? I will appreciate
any suggestions, experiences you may have.

Merci d'avance,
Tammy
