I'm writing to let you know that I have decided to retire in June
2007 from my position as Director of Language Study and Director of
the Center for Language Study at Yale University. A formal
announcement of the search for a successor, with full job
description, will follow early in January.

The Center for Language Study (CLS) complements the teaching of 50
languages by about 100 teachers, who have their appointments in nine
departments and four area studies councils, and it works with all
these units and many others, including Summer Session, International
Education and Fellowship Programs, and the MacMillan Center for
International and Area Studies. The Center is fully integrated into
the academic life of Yale, and we enjoy the full support of the
administration at all levels to extend and strengthen language
learning opportunities for Yale College, the Graduate School and ten
professional schools. The CLS has an extraordinarily talented
professional staff of 15 (some of them grant-funded) who provide
professional development support for language faculty and
technological resources for all language teaching and learning at
Yale. Holding this position has given me more pleasure and
satisfaction than any other of my career -- but I'm looking forward
to traveling and spending time with my first grandchild!

With warmest regards to all of you --
                Nina
