We are piloting AccuTrack's lab plug-in & library / media feature with a bar code reader for full deployment in the spring semester (we're switching to this from a paper sign-in sheet & a checkout system whereby we held a student's ID hostage until an item was returned). Tallying / tracking student data & media management on paper had become a waste of lab staff time (time, of course, better spent actually helping people learn languages with technology!).

The lab plug-in (PC software running on all student stations) is what students sign in & out of the lab with. The bar code reader (hardware) is for the lab's single-copy items (books, DVDs, CD-Roms, DVD-Roms, etc.) that students check out with their ID. Students can also be signed in & out of the lab with the bar code reader if you so choose. I think we got a good deal because other entities on campus already had AccuTrack (our Tutoring Services, for example), and that meant we didn't need the full-blown package just for the language lab. However, it's not that expensive. So far, it's working well. More info @ http://www.accutrack.org/indexMain.htm .

Dear Colleagues:

I wonder what kind of bar code program you use to keep track of your
equipment and resources ?
The inventory in our language department is less than 2000 items though it
is growing.
We've identified B-Coder Pro v4.0 ($395) and scanner ($200) by TAL tech.
I will appreciate it if you could provide any experience with these
products or others.

Thank you.
