Janet,

Over the years I have developed two job descriptions, depending on what
type of student worker I really need. One is for a generic position, the
other for students who have some substantial computer expertise (see
below). As the years go by we are needing more of the later. Obviously
each lab will have its own needs. For example some labs manage a
computer network, which we do not.

At first I was hesitant to ask for "too much" when it came for
computer-related skills, especially given the fact that our hourly pay
is very low. But I have found that the more I ask for, the more I get.
There are students who are astonishingly knowledgeable and just itching
to apply their knowledge in a constructive way.

Below are the sample job descriptions. Hope this helps--good luck!

I am hoping to hire a few work-study students to work
in my language lab. Does anyone have a good job
description for student employees and/or advice about
hiring and keeping student workers?

Thanks!

Janet Starmer
French Instructor &
Language Lab Supervisor
Guilford College
