Assistant Professor, Tenure Track

The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies in the
School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is
seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished community of
faculty, students, and staff as Assistant Professor in Language,
Literacy and Culture. This is a full-time tenure track position
beginning in September 2007.

The School is NCATE-approved and offers a comprehensive program
leading to master's and doctoral degrees. We share a fundamental
commitment to social justice and the pursuit of educational
excellence.  Located in the scenic Pioneer Valley of western
Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst is the
flagship campus of the Commonwealth's university system and is one of
today's leading centers of public higher education in the Northeast.

Qualifications: Doctorate in Language, Literacy and Culture or closely
related field; substantial background in language and literacy from a
socio-cultural perspective; experience teaching culturally and
linguistically diverse students at pre-college level or university
level (both preferred); demonstrated potential for scholarship,
research, and publication. Preference given to candidates that have
teacher education experience with pre-service and/or in-service
teachers, experience serving diverse communities and second language
proficiency. Relevant areas of research include, but are not limited
to, first and second- language literacy development, critical literacy
education, new literacies, multicultural literacy practices,
multilingual urban teacher education with a focus on academic
literacy, and writing across the curriculum.

Responsibilities: Teach; advise, and supervise graduate students in
the Language, Literacy, and Culture doctoral concentration and the
Bilingual, English Language Learners, Reading and Writing and
Multicultural Education master's concentration; take a leadership role
in the preparation of pre-service and in-service teachers while
working closely with colleagues to develop clinical/professional
development school sites; maintain an academic research program;
initiate, lead and participate in externally-funded projects. The
appointee will be a member of an active research and reform community
that has garnered state and federally funded grants focused on student
achievement and development of literacy, English language acquisition
and on teacher as inquirer and policy maker.
