Oh come on!
iPhoto is a fair image catalog that's barely scriptable.
( and I probably count as an iPhoto fan -- all my personal photos are
in iPhoto.
   I like it's easy retouching -- I'm not a Photoshop expert -- but
it's not a great
cataloging tool, and like all of Apple's i-Programs, it enforces
an everything-goes
   into-one-big-database-and-doesn't-come-out-easily view that is
great for beginners
( no file management or thinking about where to put things ) but
falls apart when
you actually want to try to put everything you own into it. )

iView MediaPro <http://www.iview-multimedia.com/> is a more capable
cataloger
that is very scriptable. I can still, however, find a few things to
complain about:

   • Some of the "higher-level" commands aren't scriptable. For
example: last I looked,
you couldn't do the iView sort-by command from AS, but you could
sort the appropriate
fields yourself in Applescript and then reorder the catalog view
yourself. Lots of
very annoying but non-fatal omissions like that.

   •	They have had a tendency to change the AS dictionary and
implementation in ways
that completely break all your scripts. Usually the changes are
improvements, though.
The major breakage is usually (but not always) restricted to major
releases.

   •	Expensive: $199. I think the price went up significantly from
version 2.x to version 3.x,
but without as significant increase in capabilities. I think they
decided that they are not
really competing with iPhoto, and are just after the professional
and serious amateur
market. But still, I'ld balk at that price if I was paying out of my
own pocket ( I've used
it mostly at work. ) [ Students can get 50% off, and there's a 21
day free trial download. ]
