Ebay can be useful in a situation like this. There *is* a DVD of Yellow 
Earth but it has no English at all. There are a few secondhand VHS 
copies with subtitles available, and a laserdisk. These are in the "buy 
it now" section.

There is a listing for "the Zhang Yimou collection" which includes a DVD 
of Yellow Earth--no subtitles but a lot of films cheap. Maybe the 
English-sub version is in the works...?
