Hi All,

Just to add a little bit more to the discussion, Audacity has come out
with a stable, prerelease build (1.2.5) for Intel Macs which can be
found at http://audacityteam.org/mac/. As you'll see by the website,
development is definitely in the early stages, but here is what I found
when I installed it on our G5 Dual Core (2Ghz, 512 MB) running 10.4.7.

*Download and install went fine

*I was able to record, edit and playback without a problem (This was
not a rigorous test, by the way).

*I could export in .wav and .ogg format, but NOT in .mp3 because a
proper LAMELib has not been developed. The LAME encoder is what allows
Audacity to export to the .mp3 format. According to the forum, someone
at Audacity is working on compiling the LAME encoder in the Universal
Binary format for newer Macs. This was in early June, I think. Stay
tuned for further developments. Maybe someone in open-source land will
beat them to it.

*Since we are talking about a Mac though, I was able to import my
Audacity .wav files into iTunes and export them off as .mp3.

And because one of my colleagues asked and I was curious...

*After I saved an Audacity project on the Intel Mac, I was able to open
it on a PowerPC Mac (G5 running 10.3.9 and my laptop running 10.4.6,
both running Audacity 1.2.3) but I couldn't hear the work I had saved. I
could see the waveform, but not hear it. Same thing with an attempt to
open it on my WinXP machine running Audacity 1.2.4. I did not try
Audacity 1.3.

If I learn anything more, I'll certainly contribute it to this list. As
I said, my testing was not all that rigorous.

Thanks!
R

Hi Sharon,

We've been having a very similar problem on a quad-core G5 for months
without being able to find any real solution. Prior to 10.4.7, I found
a
trick to keep the problem at bay for a time: close Audacity, open
GarageBand, play a few notes on the keyboard, close GarageBand, and
reopen Audacity. Since upgrading to 10.4.7, however, that doesn't work

for me. (I suspect it's a problem with the way Audacity interfaces with

the CoreAudio drivers OS X uses.) Anyhoo, it's worth a shot.

I hope your summer is going well!

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Hello,

Yes, we had problems adding Audacity to a PC image. We found that we
just
couldn't put it on the image. We assigned student interns to install it
on
individual machines after ghosting.

We have had the same problem, and after both online research and
speaking to our Apple rep we have yet to find a solution. My best
hope is that the makers of Audacity will release an intel-based
version soon. I know that the demand is there, so hopefully somebody
with the requisite skills will step up to the plate. I wish I had
better news, and if anybody does, please share it with us!!
