I doubt if they ever weren't.  Mail used to have its own Scripts menu 
but they removed it when they realised that nobody had yet managed to 
write a useful script for Mail.  I say this only to encourage one of 
the few people on this list who use Mail to sing the praises of its 
aete and solve your problem. :-)
