FileMaker 4 classic CPU hog

When running FileMaker 4 in classic it uses all available CPU cycles,  
even when hidden in the background.

FileMaker 3 does NOT have this problem.

I have seen this on 4 clients' Macs.
Is there a workaround?
They do not want to update FileMaker.
