Audio and Video for the 21st Century

"I'd love to have my students use more audio and video, but can't think of
ways to integrate it."
"We'd love to enter the digital age, but do not have the money to upgrade
to a turnkey-lab."
"I wish someone would show me ways how to better engage my students."
"How can I use technology to further integrate communicative strategies
into my classes?"
Does this sound familiar? Staying on top of things in the field of Language
Technology often seems a daunting task. Geared towards faculty and
laboratory support staff with little or no multimedia production
experience, this hands-on workshop will focus on a variety of free (or very
affordable) programs that are now available, waiting for creative language
professionals to utilize them to their fullest potential. We will look at
applications like Audacity, Skype, DL Recorder, Audio Portfolios,
PodcastMaker, and a selection of other tools that will enable us and our
students to effectively work on their listening and speaking skills --
alone, in tandem, and in conference calls -- and thus help them connect
with a diverse world.
Participants will learn general procedures and techniques relevant to all
digital video and audio applications including how to appropriately record,
edit, and compress media for Internet-delivery and integration into
instructional materials like Hot Potatoes and Quia. Most applications we
will be working with can be used on Macs, PCs, and in a Linux environment.
