Language Learning Resource Center (LLRC)

REPORTS TO: Manager, IITS/ITMS, daily priorities are set by
the Dean's Office - College of Arts and Sciences
GRADE: 12 ($45,444 - $60,947)
SUPERVISES: Support staff and students providing IT support
within the College of Arts and Sciences
BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for information technology systems in a department or
area, analyzes needs, and determines and implements appropriate
solutions. This particular position supports information technology
services and systems in the Language Learning Resource Center (LLRC)
and also provides media support for Independence Hall, including the
Screening Room. This position provides authoritative assistance to
customers. May also serve as senior technologist on a project team
that involves other support staff. Performs duties and
responsibilities with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for providing technology support for a college within the
university, supporting computer laboratories for classroom
instruction, administrative uses of information technology including
file and web servers, and other events within the college. This
includes: supervising staff and student workers, maintaining
computerized schedules/records, equipment setup, maintenance, and
installation. Serve on college computer advisory committees as
appropriate. Remain up-to-date with state-of-the-art technology.
Provide hardware, software, A/V media, server, and networking support
within Arts and Sciences facilities.
Maintain audio, video, and computer equipment, including
installation, small repairs, and preventive maintenance. Produce
digital materials for use in the LLRC. Transfer video materials into
multiple international standards for classroom and LLRC use. Provide
faculty and staff training on computer-assisted language learning
(CALL) software and language learning applications for other
software. Provide faculty and staff training on multimedia equipment
in the Independence Hall multimedia rooms or which is available for
check out. Stay current with new technologies in the field of
language learning. Maintain records for inventory, repair, and usage
of equipment; other duties as required.
Serve as the senior technologist responsible for a complex system or
application.
Analyze the information technology needs of a college, department, or
area and determine appropriate solutions.
Provide authoritative technical consultation to customers.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Respond to technical emergencies outside of normal working hours as
needed.
Must be able to perform all duties on a distributed basis, with
minimum supervision.
Coordinate with IITS Manager of ITMS regularly. Daily priorities are
set by the Dean's Office within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Perform the duties of an Information Technologist and perform other
related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Must have experience with current digital and analog technology for
language learning and multimedia equipment for classroom use.
Personal computers (Windows and Macintosh O/S), printers and word
processing, database management and spreadsheet software.
Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited
to, lifting heavy electronic equipment (up to 30-40 pounds
unassisted); bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to
safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the maintenance
and repair of electronic media equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental
conditions; however, the individual must be able work safely in an
environment with possible exposure to electrical hazards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree; either 2 years' experience in an
information technology position, or 4 years' experience in a position
that included a substantial amount of information technology work;
demonstrated ability to address needs of distributed support;
experience in use of desktop/laptop computer hardware and software
(Windows 2000/XP and/or Mac platforms); understanding of virus/
firewall applications commonly used on Windows servers/clients and
Macintosh systems; experience supporting classroom and instructional
technology including multimedia projection hardware and software;
evidence of having had experience in performing duties and
responsibilities with only minimal supervision; strong interpersonal
skills, with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in
writing; ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise support
staff; ability to perform physical activities; ability to comprehend
and utilize common maintenance manuals and power tools, and work
safely around electrical circuits. PREFERRED: Master's degree;
experience in the areas of teaching, providing effective customer
services (preferably in higher education) in evaluating products, and
preparing reports; experience in the design of multimedia systems for
classroom support; experience with web authoring and digital media
production; experience supporting needs of classroom instruction and
college level academic and administrative technology activities;
prior experience in the management of a language laboratory at a
college or university; fluency in at least one language other than
English.
