hdiutil is an OSX shell command.  I think it is on every version of  
OS X that has shipped.

fire up terminal and say "man hdiutil" to see how to use it.

some examples

do shell script "hdiutil  create -size 50m ~/desktop/foo.dmg -fs HFS+"
do shell script "hdiutil mount ~/desktop/foo.dmg"
