Here at the University of Hawaii we are using Flash Communications Server, a
cheaper alternative, for videoconferencing as we don't have the "boodles of
dollars" needed for the Polycom system. Unfortunately, the two systems are
incompatible and we wouldn't be able to participate in any collaborations.
We are using it to conduct occasional video sessions between an ESL class
here and one in France.

The Flash Communications Server is also used to send audio clips over the
web for on-line courses in combination with Audacity. This relates to the
thread of how to include an oral component in a Spanish 101 on-line course.
It is also used for regular on-campus language classes to allow students to
send audio clips to their instructors for feedback. In addition the on-line
courses have face-to-face sessions with a tutor.

We have a Polycom system that is on 24/7. If you like to connect for
testing, our IP is 136.244.12.100. but there may be nobody to talk...

Another good experience is attending the Megaconference, an annual
world wide videoconference event that will take place December 9. More
informatioon are available at htttp://www.megaconference.org/

Hope this can help.
