Hi,
I can't speak from experience as I have yet to try this myself, but it seems to
me
that one solution would be to use SMIL.  This website
http://compcanlit.usherbrooke.ca/eslcafe/quicktime/ demonstrates what the effect
is
to a certain degree.  Of course, this might be more demanding technically than
iMovie, but it might resolve your current problems.
