Hi all,
   Here at MIT (Cambridge, MA) we have a job opening for -our
shorthand title - a computer specialist.  I've included the job

Local System Administrator/ Programmer

Language Learning and Resource Center (LLARC)

The LLARC is a learning and materials development facility for
Foreign Languages and Literatures that includes two classrooms, a
large multimedia study area and support services with servers and
advanced computer digitizing stations.  We are looking for a
responsible, self-motivated individual to oversee and keep current
the Center's networked hardware and software, and to serve as
programmer on a team developing multimedia, foreign language software
in desktop or on-line formats.

Responsibilities:
* Install and maintain system, application, backup, and security
software on client and server computers in this predominantly
Macintosh-based facility.
* Maintain upgrades to equipment and software needed to deliver
digital audio and video over an internal network and a web server.
* Serve as programmer on interactive media projects for Foreign
Languages and Literatures.  Assist/train student developers in some
programming tasks.
* Oversee development area and maintain standards in operating procedures.
* Troubleshoot software, hardware, and internal network problems.
* Assess hardware configurations and software requirements / specifications.
* Make recommendations to the Director for computers, servers,
printers, audio and video capture boards, and other related
multimedia and presentation peripherals.
* Act as liaison between the LLARC and MIT's network and information
systems department.
* Train LLARC's student staff in routine computer skills such as data
entry, media editing, or software updates.

REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelors degree in a related field and 2-5 years of
related experience. Proficiency in web authoring (HTML, XHTML, or
JavaScript).  Familiarity with Macintosh and UNIX operating systems
and with databases (e.g. FileMaker Pro, SQL).  Knowledge of Mac OS 10
Server and use of software tools to manage client computers, maintain
users and groups, and do network-based software updates and
installations. Fluency in either Java or C/C++.   Knowledge of
digital media formats and familiarity with QuickTime.

The following skills will be considered helpful:  Windows XP,  Apache
web server management, client and server-side scripting in
JavaScript, Perl or PHP, media asset management, and basic graphic
editing in PhotoShop.  Study of, or fluency in a foreign language.

Good teamwork skills, flexibility in working with a diverse group of
faculty and staff, and ability to manage your area of responsibility
effectively are essential.
