Hi Emma,

A few things come to mind immediately.
1) does she have a learning disability, in general? If so it is OK to test
her differently and probably recommended.

2) There are numerous resources for how to learn a language available and
the important part of those is for one of you to figure out what her
learning style is and approach her with materials appropriate to her
learning style, ie. Visual, auditory, etc. Whatever the learning style,
regular repetition/practice is the key. 10 min. everyday is better than 90
min one day a week.

3) Be sure that she isn't taking advantage of you and the situation looking
for an easy way out. I'm not saying that she is but just be careful, I've
had the happen before and it is common among new teachers to not see the
signs.

Here is a site to get you started on "how to learn a language" from the kind
folks at Univ. of Michigan, and I suspect there are many more out there:
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/rll/resources/learnlang.html

Good luck,
Lauren
