>Subject: Language labs without carrels?
>From: jrodriguez <[log in to unmask]>
>To: Language Forum <[log in to unmask]>

Dear All,

One option that our department is considering in remodeling our
language lab is to eliminate carrels, but several faculty have
expressed concern that in doing so we will leave the students open to
the distraction of what is going on at the station next to them and
make it difficult for them to make clear audio recordings that don't
pick up their neighbors voice.

Does anyone have experience with a carrel-less lab? If so, is
distraction an issue? Is poor quality of audio recording an issue? If
so, are there work-arounds?

Cheers,

Janice
