Sometimes there are warnings on machines because suppliers had a complaint
or two about a format not working. Even if it works 99+% of the time, they
don't want the nusiance factor or legal liability if someone finds a tape
or disk that doesn't work in a particular format. The problem's in the
media.

If you buy a Cyberhome CH-300 from World Gift Center, this model is listed
as "not for DVD-R disks". It does play normal DVD-R disks, but they are
covering themselves for the occasional one that doesn't. As Derek
mentioned some time earlier, no DVD player can guarantee to play all
formats. Too many production variables as well as formats. On VHS tapes,
I have had occasional trouble with a French Secam tape. A well-used or
re-recorded one might not work well or lose its color. But that's the most
demanding standard for VHS so problems are more likely to show up there.
