I would like to thank everyone who responded to my question both via the
list and privately.  Some of the suggestions were very helpful.  The
piracy problem is very much a serious issue that should not be
minimized.  It is however frustrating when the barriers to piracy
inhibit actual fair use.

This is an unpleasant situation because it is illegal to work around
these features (Digital Millenium act) but on the other hand one has the
right to do so in a situation involving face-to-face teaching or a
digital classroom (TEACH act).

Thanks to the fact that there is no budget to replace our old equipment,
I find that I have a vintage setup of DVD player and VHS recorder which
will make a good copy of some copy-protected DVDs, without any
finagling. So I'd advise finding a "grandfather" pair of players to get
"grandfathered" past the rule.
