I am using a wiki in my 3rd semester Italian course. Each student was
assigned a secondary city in Italy, and over the course of the semester they
periodically post information that they've found online on their city page,
they comment on each other's pages, and do a variety of interactive and
collaborative activities. The purposes are several: to hold students
accountable for doing online research that is intended to expose them to
target culture information and language, to share their findings with their
classmates, to gain practice writing on different thematic areas while using
different target grammar and vocabulary items, to give practice in
peer-editing and other collaborative practices, and overall, to attempt to
engage the learners.

The advantage over weblogs is that students can post pictures, create new
pages and link to one another in different ways. There is something of a
"design" element to the pages that helps to maintain interest and appeal (at
least for some). I will be concluding the semester-long project with an
evaluation component to help determine whether the project was "successful,"
if it engaged students (it seems to be) and how it can be improved.
