Hi Joseph,

Yes, you can use the floating On-Screen Keyboard to type accented vowels.
We tried making it available in our lab, but frankly, we thought the number
combinations were easier than using the On-Screen Keyboard.

The process is that you go to the Control Panel>>Regional and Language
Settings.  Click on the "Languages" tab and add the relevant languages to
the language bar.  In fact, if you know the layout of the language keyboard,
you don't need the On-Screen Keyboard.  Microsoft (I use 2003) converts the
keyboard to any language once you change the language on the task bar.  So,
if you taped a visual representation around the monitor, students could
choose their accented characters from their regular keyboard.  For example,
in the French layout, the "7" key corresponds with the accented "e" (e).

The On-Screen Keyboard will give the visual representation of the various
keyboard layouts.  1) You can open the On-Screen Keyboard
[Programs>>Accessories>>Accessibility>>On-Screen Keyboard].  2) Then click
back into the document you want to type on.  3) From the task bar/language
bar choose the language you want.  4)  Click back into the document where
you want the letter or word.  5) Click the appropriate letter on the
keyboard.  6) Change the language back by clicking in the document again and
then choosing the different language.  *Note: When you change the language,
it is not just for the On-Screen Keyboard.  It changes your regular keyboard
also.

Hello.  I am wondering if there is a utility for Win XP that provides a
floating window with clickable accented vowels for input into text
areas in web interfaces.  We train students how to type these vowels but
so many students are taking tests and doing assignments in our lab, I am
looking for a simpler way to support diacritic input.   Is there such an
animal?  I want to avoid cutting and pasting solutions.  A simple click on
a symbol should insert the letter.   XP's On Screen Keyboard found under
the accessibility programs works fine but I cannot find the accented
vowels.  If I could customize this tool to show letters that I want, it
would work fine.   Joseph
