Jack,
I use any microphone with a mini-plug and the Griffin iMic adapter for
audio input on our office G4 and the iMacs in our lab. It is switchable
for both Line and Mic level input, so you can also use it for audio
capture with tape decks, etc.

We also tried the Telex USB adapter, but had problems in OS9 and OSX-10.1
with the drivers getting lost when the machine slept and we'd have to
reboot to get audio out again.
