>Subject: Re: #7406 Language lab director's responsibilities

Barbara,

Congratulations on your new future language center. You may receive some good suggestions from this list. I'd also like to recommend that you consult IALLT, the International Association for Language Learning Technology. The website is www.iallt.org

For example, one of the things you will find there is the "IALLT Statement of Professional Responsibilities" at http://www.iallt.org/iallt_documents/IALLTProfessional.pdf
It's a fairly comprehensive list of the duties of language technology specialists, many of whom act as director of a language center.

The question about salary is a tougher one to address. The results of a survey that was done more than 10 years ago showed salaries ranging from less than $20,000 to over $70,000. It's safe to say that there is still such a broad range, but I think that if you look at the list of typical responsibilities, which include research and education, then you'll conclude that this person should be well paid. The days of "managing" technology are really over, in a sense, because technology is much more complex and changes more rapidly than in the past.

Finally, your new director would certainly benefit from a publication entitled the IALLT
Management Manual and perhaps also the Language Center Design Kit, both written to assist center directors do their work.

I hope this is helpful.

This message was originally submitted by [log in to unmask] to the LLTI list
at LISTSERV.DARTMOUTH.EDU. If you simply forward it back to the list, using a
mail command that generates "Resent-" fields (ask your local user support or
consult the documentation of your mail program if in doubt), it will be
distributed and the explanations you are now reading will be removed
automatically. If on the other hand you edit the contributions you receive into
a digest, you will have to remove this paragraph manually. Finally, you should
be able to contact the author of this message by using the normal "reply"
function of your mail program.

Hello,

I'm the chair of Modern Languages at Capital University in Columbus,
Ohio. We are about to acquire a Sony Virtuoso/Soloist language lab and
will obviously need a lab director.

The dean of Arts and Sciences has asked me for a list of the
responsibilities of a language lab director as well as a salary range so
that he can include this in next year's budget. Unfortunately, he needs
this information immediately.

Since we don't currently have a language lab, and at the suggestion of
the director of the language lab at St. Olaf College, I am asking for
your help with the list of responsibilities as well as salary range.
Hours your lab is open would also be very helpful.

Thanks so much in advance!
